Mangrove Breakthrough COP28

The Mangrove Breakthrough was launched at COP27, as a part of the Sharm El-Sheik Adaptation Agreement. The GMA in collaboration with the UN Climate Change High-level Champions unified to create the ‘Mangrove Breakthrough’ - a global approach to mangrove conservation. Built from science, measurable and achievable goals for non-state actors and governments to collectively restore and protect 15m hectares of mangroves globally by 2030, in order to ensure their future. However in order to achieve this, it is essential to unlock $4bn in investments.

The challenge

This year Mangroves have even more focus through the various Climate Weeks and COP28, so in the lead up to these events, the Mangrove Breakthrough needed a strong and consistent visual identity to drive recognition, credibility and general awareness throughout and post this years climate agenda.
"Amazing how Yoke guided us, in a few steps within a very short time span, towards the creation of a beautiful logo and styleguide for the Mangrove Breakthrough, hitting the right sentiment of magnitude and urgency with this groundbreaking initiative to safeguard these key ecosystems."

Susanna Tol, Senior Communications and Advocacy Officer - Wetlands International

The solution

It was clear that the Mangrove Breakthrough needed a confident and accessible (considering the global nature) visual identity. We also considered how we could bring the credibility of the initiative through, which was solved naturally by bringing in elements of the GMA style - driving recognition whilst subtly driving consistency between the two to allow to the GMA credibility to ring through to the Mangrove Breakthrough.

Using simple and clear icons, colours and mangrove shore contour patterns to build out a unique, relevant and distinct visual identity to support the Mangrove Breakthrough purpose.

Crafting a distinct brand mark in the form of a type driven logo further enforces the recognition with added clarity in the literal symbolism. Also, aiding the urgent importance of the initiative with the subtle forward perspective, suggesting movement, in the shape housing this and the mangrove symbol 'breaking through'.

The impact

Immediately, this work allows the Mangrove Breakthrough to gain a distinct identity, building recognition and engagement to gain global commitments to protect mangroves.

The future

The launch of the Mangrove Breakthrough with it's greatest audience was at COP28 and we're excited to see the true impact of this and it's longevity moving through to 2030.
